The Strangest Apartment
After spending a few days in Leblon (a lovely neighborhood in Rio), we decided to stay in a different section for a change of pace. Off to Santa Teresa we went. Much less touristy. Much more unique.
We were greeted by Paloma, who kindly showed us our new abode. We were instructed not to open the windows because “it’s not safe.” Always a good sign.
It would have been too much work to open the windows anyways. Each window and door had no fewer than three separate lock systems. Safety first!
There were some interesting decorations. Or, perhaps, utilities? It’s hard to say.
The good news is that we were in good shape in case we had to weigh, sew, or iron something from the 1800s.
We also had the capacity to simultaneously put out fires, attack people, and play music. The apartment really had it all.
After waging war with the three-tiered lock system, we had the opportunity to relax on the balcony. Also, the bathroom was out here. So hopefully no emergencies which would require quick access in the middle of the night.
Speaking of the bathroom, the toilet stopped working on our second day there. In fact, all water decided to take a hiatus. Oh well. There’ always something.
One night, after Ekaterina made caipirinhas with maracuyas (and calling me rude names after I suggested they were rather strong), we went to Rio Scenarium to hear some music. The accordion was glorious.
Despite the safety warnings, everything turned out just fine. It was a great experience to see another side of Rio firsthand.
